Tesla Opens First India Showroom in Mumbai, Showcases Model Y

Tesla has officially stepped into the Indian automobile market with the launch of its first showroom.

Located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai, the showroom was unveiled on July 15.

This marks a significant milestone in Tesla’s India journey after years of anticipation and regulatory discussions.

Showroom Launch:
The Mumbai showroom is Tesla’s first physical presence in the country.

The facility showcases the company’s premium electric SUV — the Model Y.

The launch event included six Model Y units on display, imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory.

Models on Display:
The company is presenting the Model Y in both rear-wheel-drive and long-range configurations.

These models are expected to appeal to India’s luxury EV buyers who seek performance, range, and brand recognition.

Pricing in India:
Tesla’s Model Y is priced starting at approximately ₹60 lakh.

The long-range variant goes up to around ₹68 lakh.

These prices are high due to heavy import duties levied on completely built units (CBUs), which stand around 70%.

Bookings and Deliveries:
Tesla has opened online bookings for the Model Y starting July 15.

Customers can reserve their vehicles via the official Tesla India website. Deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025.

Charging Infrastructure:
As part of its India entry strategy, Tesla is planning to set up Supercharger stations in Mumbai and Delhi NCR.

This move is intended to support its early adopters and encourage EV growth by reducing range anxiety.

Market Context:
The luxury electric vehicle market in India is still emerging, making up only 4–5% of total new car sales. Tesla will face competition from established players like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Kia, who have already introduced premium EVs.

Future Plans:
Currently, Tesla is entering the Indian market through imports. However, the Indian government’s new policy incentives may pave the way for future local manufacturing. Tesla has not yet confirmed any plant setup, but it is closely monitoring policy developments.

Tesla’s entry into India through its Mumbai showroom signals a new era for premium electric mobility in the country. With high interest from tech-savvy consumers and urban professionals, Tesla is poised to shape the luxury EV segment. The success of its early operations will likely determine its long-term manufacturing and expansion plans in India.
